Researchers at Penn State University and Vanderbilt University are doing a study on how positive emotions and the brain develop to promote mental health in children
Who may be eligible?
Four to six year old children and their mothers
What will we do?
- Parents will complete questions about moods and emotions at the start of the study and one and two years later
- Children will play computer games while brain activity is measured with a stretchy cap at the start of the study and one and two years later in person at Penn State University

BEAM
Researchers at Penn State University are conducting a research study on mothers and their children. In this study, we are examining how individual differences in emotion regulation patterns are implicated in risk for depression in children and adolescents.
Who can take part in this study?
Mothers and their children, ages 9-14, may be eligible. Children must not have any metal in their body and agree to have an MRI
What will happen during this study?
Participants will:
- Complete questionnaires and interviews about moods and emotions
- Have electroencephalogram (EEG) and neuroimaging scans (fMRI) at the start of the study, at 12 months and 24 months
- Complete follow-up survey and interview assessments at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months
Families will be compensation for their time and effort

Important note* This study takes place at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mothers and their children (ages eight–twelve) are needed for a study testing a new intervention to try and prevent the development of depression in children. You may be eligible if you are a mother and have experienced symptoms of depression at some time in your life.
Families will be paid up to $390 for their participation.
